What is Sexual Assault?

Sexual assault and abuse is any type of sexual activity that you do not agree to.  Sexual assault can be verbal, visual, or anything that forces a person to join in unwanted sexual contact or attention.  Examples of sexual abuse include:
  • Touching any parts of the body
  • Verbal comments about one’s body, including what type of clothing one wears
  • Name-calling (whore, slut, bitch, queer, fag etc.)
  • Wolf whistles and cat calls
  • Sexual innuendo
  • Sexual or dirty jokes
  • Leering or staring at another’s body
  • Obscene t-shirts, hats, pins, etc.
  • Pressure for sexual activity
  • Spreading sexual rumors
  • Hand and mouth gestures
  • Bra snapping
  • Facial expressions (winking, kissing, etc.)
  • “Rating” someone from 1 – 10
  • Put downs of females and males
  • Unwanted touching
  • Discussion of partner’s sexual performance, history etc.
  • Pinching, grabbing, holding on to someone
  • Display of pornography
  • Lewd or threatening letters
  • Continuous pressure for a date
  • Demanding “Hey baby give me a smile.”
  • Sabotaging someone’s work
  • Quid pro quo behavior/suggestions
  • Obscene or hang up phone calls
  • Inappropriate invitations or gifts
  • Sexist or sexual graffiti
  • Rubbing and brushing up against someone
  • Attempted sexual assault
  • Stalking
  • Rape
